An Open Letter to Sleep

Dear Sleep,

You are one of the longest-term relationships I've ever had. So when I say that it's really NOT about you, I hope you'll believe me. It's not. You're wonderful just the way you are.

It's...well...I don't know how to say this without hurting you, but I've met someone else...two someones, actually. They are much younger, and they are quite adorable. Oh, and they are requiring more time than I ever could have imagined--so much so that I'm afraid I don't have the time you deserve from me. We both need to face the fact that the relationship we once had just isn't there anymore, and as much as I don't want to call it quits, I'm afraid that it's already happened.

I do hope that you understand, and I want you to know that my deepest desire is that one day we will be able to pick up where we left off.

Until then, I am most longingly yours,

Tracy

P.S. If you need to see the faces of your competition, here they are. Perhaps you'll now understand how they have won my affection so completely.

Tired but HAPPY!

AH!!! Too cute! Loved the post and the ode to sleep! We broke up almost six months ago. Life has never been so deliriously happy!

I'd drop sleep like a hot potato, too, for these cuties! :)

Oh no! Maybe I should not have read this post!:) I am in denial. Surely I will still have a great relationship with sleep in a few months. Right?....Right?

Those two are definitely worth the sacrifice... Despite that you look beautiful and your sons are gorgeous!!

p.s. I'm praying that you get secret rendezvous with sleep very soon. :)

What cuties! Yup, sleep is always the first to go (and like many I love my sleep). But man, those boys are worth it! Best to you all! Michele

When you arms and your heart is that full, sleep just can't compete.

Okay, that should read "When your arms and your heart ARE that full"

I'm going to blame the oops on my own lack of sleep (which you get back after a while, and then middle age hits...)

Very nicely done. Yeah, sleep goes away for awhile after babies (and toddlers) come into the picture. I remember when Maya was about 2ish, Ted had to go somewhere and stay in a hotel for a few days. I was SO jealous. Then I went on a business trip not long after, and I missed being home more than I enjoyed my uninterrupted sleep! Funny how that works.

Who needs sleep when you can see your dreams come true!

So TRUE! But it's nothing that some Starbucks and a little concealer will hide from the general public! You look adorable, and as Patrick's mother's best friend reminded me when I was trying to power through new baby and old schedules: If Mama is tired and run down, it's no good for ANYONE in the house! Even 10 or 15 minute power naps do a world of wonder. If that means throw everyone in the bed WITH you, so be it!! You look great, and the babies are beautiful!!!!

Oh Tracy, they are so worth it. On the other side, you should get it back so quickly with good training. They have so much adjusting to do, but after they do, and with good training, you will get the sleep you so sorely miss! After I finally settled in this house, Alexandra being 4 months, finally let me start sleeping again. She just needed routine and it all fell into place with a little encouragement. With two kids, I can say I do get 8 hours sleep every night with 4 hours all to myself to do what I want. It will come!! Bless your heart!
